Bruges Through the Ages
The First Settlement
Where the North Sea met the marshlands, a Frankish fortification took root along the Reie.
Named "Bryggia" — the mooring place — this humble settlement would become one of Europe's greatest cities. Viking raids shaped its defenses, while trade routes through its waterways planted the seeds of a prosperous future.
The Rising Town
Stone walls replaced wooden palisades as Bruges emerged as a thriving medieval town.
The first Cloth Hall rose beside the market, and the Basilica of the Holy Blood received its sacred relic from the Second Crusade. Flemish weavers transformed English wool into the finest textiles in Europe, drawing merchants from across the known world.
The Cloth Trade Era
At the crossroads of European commerce, Bruges became the chief trading city of the northwest.
Italian bankers opened counting houses along its canals. The Belfry tower rose 83 meters above the market square, its bells marking the rhythms of trade. The city's population swelled to 46,000 — rivaling London and Paris in wealth and influence.
Golden Age
The Venice of the North reached its zenith in art, culture, and prosperity.
Jan van Eyck painted masterworks that would define Western art. The Burgundian court held lavish festivities in grand guildhalls. The Church of Our Lady's 115-meter brick spire — the tallest in the world — proclaimed Bruges' glory across the Flemish countryside.
Timeless Beauty
A UNESCO World Heritage city, preserved through centuries of patient devotion.
Its medieval core remains virtually intact — a living museum of Gothic architecture, winding canals, and hidden courtyards. And here, within these storied streets, Threads of Time continues the tradition of welcoming travelers to experience the soul of Flanders.
